Sex is supposed to be a pleasant experience that should make one feel relaxed, calm down the senses, strengthen the relationship and give the experience of love. However, for many of us, this is not the case. Sex can be quite painful for many women; so much so, that they might like to abstain themselves from it, thus harming their relationship with their partner and even their health!

It is said that 4 out of 10 women face or have faced pain during sex. In some cases this is a temporary phase, but for some this issue is recurring and they might have to undertake proper treatment for it and that too, in time. To know what kind of pain is temporary or permanent in nature, one has to find out about the various reasons for which such issues occur.

Causes for Painful Sex:

The pain during sex is mostly the pain in the vulva, perineum, lower back, bladder or the uterus. This can be caused due to the following reasons:

  2. Vulvar Skin Disorder: Skin disorders like contact dermatitis may lead to ulcers or cracks in the vulva region. The condition can occur due to the use of irritating substances like soaps, lubricants and douches.

  3. Hormonal Imbalance: Many women experience pain during sex when they are in the perimenopause or menopause stage due to the action of estrogen hormone that tends to make the vaginal region very dry. Using lubricants in such a case can be quite helpful to ease the discomfort.

  4. Vaginismus: This is a condition where your vagina muscles tighten up when you are about to have intercourse leading to extreme pain. This condition is mostly treated by taking up proper therapeutic treatment.

  5. Vaginitis: Caused mostly due to yeast infection, vaginitis is a condition in which the vagina gets swollen. This condition is characterized by discharge from the vagina, burning and itching sensation and pain during sex.

  6. Tears: Tears during childbirth or the cuts given during an episiotomy can lead to pain during sex for many women.

How to Seek Relief?

There are a quite a few ways in which one can seek relief from pain during sex. These are:

  • Using lubricants

  • Having sex regularly

  • Sharing the issue with your partner

  • Using easier postures

  • Taking bath before sex

  • Emptying the bladder before sex

  • Using frozen gel or ice pack after sex to ease pain
