How to do a Manicure at Home

Soft, supple, clean hands which sport neatly-trimmed and polished nails grab our attention immediately. Though tempting, the sight of such hands while on one hand forces to think about the number of manicure sessions undertaken by the individual, on the other hand, we are also driven to think about the whooping amount of money that must have been spent on the task. But, how would it be if you could get similarly soft and supple hands for yourself and that too at a much lower cost? Sounds interesting right?

Well, getting the perfect set of nails and soft and clean hands is not that tough (and pricey) a task since it is not at all necessary that you need to visit a salon to get a manicure done. Yes, a manicure can be done outside a salon, at your own home, in the privacy of your room! How? Read on to know:

How to Do a Manicure at Home:

A manicure can be done very easily at home itself with the right sets of materials and some easy to find equipment. Here is a list of those:

  • Nail Paint Remover

  • Cotton swabs or balls

  • Nail Clippers

  • Cuticle Pusher and Nippers

  • Cuticle Remover

  • Nail Buffer and Emery Board

  • Hand and Nail Moisturizer

  • Base Coat

  • Nail Paint of chosen color

  • Clear Polish for Topcoat

After gathering all the equipment, now it would be the turn to sit back in your free time and start with the manicure.

Step by Step Manicure at Home:

Step 1: Clean Up

Start with cleaning your nails by removing any previously applied nail color using a nail paint remover and cotton swabs. Make sure that you dint let too much nail paint remover touch your nails as that would make the nails dry. Next, observe your nails if they require any cutting or trimming. You might as well like to shape them by removing the edges and rounding them or by cutting them to have flat heads. How you shape them is your desire, however, make sure that the nails are cleaned well of all the dirt that might be accumulated under their tips. Also smoothen the sides and tips with a buffer to avoid any rough edges.

Step 2: Soak-Up

Now it’s time to relax for a while, as you would need to put your hands in a bowl of warm water and wait for some time. You might add some gentle cleanser to the water as well, but don’t put any harsh soap or detergent as that could make your hands dry and chapped. Let the hands be in this water for about 3 to 5 minutes.

Step 3: Cuticle Attention

After soaking your hands for some time, the next turn would be to trim your cuticles, the thickened skin around the nails. One can also apply cuticle remover before trimming the cuticles as it helps in softening the cuticles incredibly, thus making it easier to remove them. The cuticles should be pushed back slightly with the cuticle pushing tool, taking care that you don’t push them too much as that could harm the nail growth and roots. Also make sure that you don’t lift, tear, force, pull or cut the cuticle while pushing it as that could lead to injuring the nail and the skin around it.

Step 4: Moisturize

Once the cuticles have been trimmed, the next step would be to moisturize the nails and hands with a rich massage cream of some oil that can be absorbed by the skin and nails. There are specialized nail and hand creams available in the online and onsite markets which can be used for the purpose. Make sure that you apply the cream or oil on all sides and edges of your hands and massage them well for attaining complete benefits. After massage, take a little nail paint remover on a cotton swab and remove the excess moisturizer from them as excess moisturizer on the nails would prevent the nail paint to set properly.

Step 5: Paint the Nails

Now it’s time to indulge in your favorite colors and pick the nail paint color you like. In case you have weak or brittle nails, you could even go in to apply a base coat of ridge filling nail paint before applying the nail color. Apply two coats of nail paint allowing time in between for the first coat to dry up properly. Once done, clean up the spills and mistakes in application with a swab wetted with nail paint remover to give a neat and clean look to your nails and hands.

A manicure is complete after you have given the perfect shape and color to your nails. However, in order to ensure the softness and cleanliness of your hands and nails, it is important that you apply a layer of moisturizer on them at least once a day. The best time would be that of night when you would not be soaking your hands or would not be touching multiple things. Also, make sure that you keep your hands clean by washing them with a good quality, mild soap often in order to avoid any kinds of bacterial or viral action.
